KNOW-HOW Environment g…/… FRP recycling technology using sub-critical water hydrolysis A molecular structure analysis of the SFC extracted from the reaction liquid was conducted by NMR and GPC. The NMR analysis showed that the styrene/fumaric acid ratio was 2.2:1. The GPC analysis indicated that its molecular weight was approximately 30,000. Enhanced recycling of the styrenefumaric acid copolymer Although the SFC’s molecular structure is similar to that of the LPA, the carboxylic acid group in the SFC needs to be modified to develop the shrinkage control effect. A modification reaction using benzyl chloride with tetra-nbutyl ammonium bromide as catalyst was conducted at 90° C for 8 hours. A modified SFC, styrene-benzyl fumarate copolymer (SBFC), was obtained after esterification as shown in figure 6. process (figure 7). FRP bathtub manufacturing waste was fed in the experimental plant together with water and an alkali catalyst, and a sub-critical water hydrolysis reaction was conducted at 230° C and 2.8 MPa. In spite of 10,000 times difference in the test scale between the reaction pipe and the experimental plant, the test showed a successful scale-up demonstration. Fig.7: Experimental plant for subcritical water hydrolysis Fig.6: Modification of the styrene-fumaric acid copolymer SMC (sheet moulding compound) sheets were produced with the SBFC and the commercial LPA comprising polystyrene, inorganic filler and glass fibre to evaluate the shrinkage control effect. After cure of the SMC sheet, the shrinkage ratio of the FRP board sample was evaluated. The results showed that the SBFC’s shrinkage control effect is almost equivalent to the commercial LPA (Table 2). The market price of commercial LPA is 5 to 10 times higher than that of styrene. The results suggest that the SFC was regenerated to such high-value-added materials after recycling. Industrially speaking, the process can be called “enhanced recycling” because the materials can be recovered and renewed to a much greater extent than in more sophisticated applications such as LPA. Tab.2: Results of the shrinkage control effect evaluation An experimental plant for inorganic material separation using the filter press method was also built. The experimental testing of the inorganic material separation process is shown in figure 8. The recovery rate of the reaction liquid and inorganic materials was 90 wt% and 95 wt%, respectively. The recovered inorganic materials were used as recycled inorganic filler to produce FRP samples to be compared with the FRP sample made from new raw materials. Their strength characteristics were evaluated. The FRP sample with recovered inorganic materials showed equivalent strength characteristics to the FRP sample with new raw materials.
