KNOW-HOW Environment FRP recycling technology using sub-critical water hydrolysis A thermosetting resin for FRP was optimally hydrolyzed to glycol and a styrenefumaric acid copolymer (SFC) using sub-critical water. The modified SFC showed an equivalent performance to a commercial low-profile additive. This process is now being proposed for enhanced recycling. I n Japan, fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) are widely used for many products such as bathtubs, boats, tanks, and so on. However, they are considered as extremely difficult to recycle satisfactorily, since their constituent thermosetting resin cannot be re-formed after the final cure. The total amount of FRP waste reaches 400,000 tons annually and, as it happens, most FRP waste is landfilled in Japan, leading to wasteful use of limited oil resources. To reduce the amount of waste and utilize exhaustible oil resources more efficiently, these materials (including thermosetting resins) should be recycled, which would be more conducive to a sustainable society. The thermosetting resins used in FRPs are a cross-linked styrene polymer (as cross-linking agent) and unsaturated polyester. In general, the unsaturated polyester is a condensate polymer consisting of glycol and maleic anhydride. They are condensed to form ester bonds through dehydration. It is known that maleic anhydride changes from malete (cis) to fumalete (trans) through the condensation. After hot-press curing, styrene cross-linking is developed. Several FRP recycling technologies, such as thermal recycling methods using high-temperature and high-pressure water, the cement kiln method, and the chemical method using glycol or benzyl alcohol, have been implemented in Japan. However, there is no effective method available to recycle FRP materials along with the thermosetting resin. We have been developing an FRP recycling technology using subcritical water hydrolysis since 2002. Sub-critical water is hightemperature, high-pressure water that is known to have a significant hydrolytic capability due to its ion product and dielectric constant. Its advantage over other chemical recycling approaches is that it breaks ester bonds more effectively. Our research aims at establishing an effective horizontal recycling technology that includes thermoset resin so as to solve the environmental issues mentioned above and as shown in figure 1. Fig.1: Overview of the FRP recycling technology using sub-critical water hydrolysis FRP recycling technology using sub-critical water hydrolysis With the FRP recycling technology using sub-critical water hydrolysis, the thermosetting resin can be recycled into basic materials with a material recycling rate of 70%. Moreover, with horizontal recycling, the FRP including the thermosetting resin can be recycled back into FRP (e.g. the old FRP bathtub into a new one) and the thermosetting resin portion of the waste can be recycled into high-value-added materials (enhanced recycling).
