EQUIPMENT EQUIPMENT EQUIPMENT EQUIPMENT EQUIPMENT Non-destructive testing Throughout a composite’s life To achieve and maintain a high level of quality in composite materials and composite parts, non-destructive testing is used all along the production chain and throughout a product’s life (up to 20 years). Here are some examples of testing devices that are used after part assembly or in service. A flaw detector without a coupling medium The Dryscan 410D is the latest digital flaw detector released by Sonatest Ltd., which is otherwise celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2008. Using the proven Shadow Technique method through transmission, the new detector is designed for the non-destructive testing of high-technology materials such as composites, hybrids and honeycomb structures found in the aerospace, aviation and marine industries amongst others. For such advanced materials, that are often combined with complex geometries, the detector concept is simple to apply and is highly reliable for fault detection, requiring only a minimum of operator training. Thanks to the unique transducers, no coupling medium is required to contact the transducers to the test material, no material surface preparation is needed, and many of the geometric considerations applied to conventional ultrasonic detection methods can be ignored. More information: www.sonatest.com Automatic shape inspection system The ShapeView is a portable, automatic shape measuring system based on the image stereo-correlation technology. It can retrieve the shape of flat or smoothly curved panels over a range of 700 x 900 mm2. The system offers fast surface mapping and reporting functions, and can characterize dents, bumps or any shape deviation. The image stereo-correlation technology combines the principles of stereovision and image correlation: the same scene is targeted by two cameras under two different vision angles, while a speckle pattern is projected onto the object to control. The recorded pictures are analyzed by the dedicated embedded software, allowing a very accurate 3D reconstruction of the object’s shape. This instrument has a 50 μm accuracy and can detect minimum damage depths of 100 μm and maximum damage depths of 200 mm, with a minimum damage diameter of 5 mm. Its measuring time is 1/1000 s and the processing time is 40 s. More information: www.ndt-expert.fr A flaw detector without a coupling medium The BondMaster™ 1000e+ is a lightweight, versatile instrument offering pitch-catch, mechanical impedance analysis (MIA), and resonance modes. It is a true multimode composite testing instrument that enables users to select the best method for a particular application and to inspect a wide variety of composite materials. It is dedicated to the manufacturing, maintenance, and repair of composite materials, and only the resonance function requires a coupling agent. With customer-interchangeable displays, the instrument provides users with a very high resolution. The colour and brightness of the display can be adjusted for indoor or bright outdoor conditions to provide flexibility and convenience. The BondMaster 1000e+ uses PowerLink technology to automatically configure the instrument when a probe is connected. Built-in calibration modes assist the user in optimizing the test parameters. A variety of probes is available for each of the test technologies. The pitch-catch mode measures amplitude and phase changes using a short burst of energy to detect disbonds. The instrument displays information in envelope or vector display format, and an impedance display is also available. The pitch-catch swept function measures amplitude and phase changes using a swept frequency method (5 kHz to 100 kHz) to detect disbonds. The MIA measures the stiffness characteristics of the material under test. The output is measured in both phase and amplitude. The resonance function detects disbonds by changes in phase and amplitude of the probe resonance. The frequency range is from 250 Hz to 1.5 MHz.
