COMPANIES COMPANIES Cam Elyaf: a bigger role in the composite industry The aim of Cam Elyaf is to diversify its product range and customer portfolio in order to take advantage of the GRP industry's growth. Founded in 1971 as a subsidiary of the Sisecam Group, Cam Elyaf is a manufacturer of E-glass fibre and related products. The company also produces unsaturated polyester resins, gelcoats and pigment pastes. amounted to about US$120 million. A diversified range of products Cam Elyaf supplies glass-fibre products such as chopped-strand mats, rovings, chopped strands, and woven rovings, as well as combimat products to customers in a number of sectors that include construction, automotive, electronics, infrastructure, building, urban furniture, highway signs, marine & shipbuilding, sport & leisure, household appliances, aircraft and energy. In order to meet the requirements for new applications and higher performance, the company has diversified its product range, adding newly developed WR5 and WR6 single-end rovings and the EMAT1 emulsion bonded mat for open-mould applications to its existing powder chopped strand mat products. WR5 and WR 6 are designed for weaving and for knitted or needled multiaxial fabrics. Their silane-based sizing makes them compatible with polyester, vinylester and epoxy resins. WR 5, which is used by weavers and multiaxial manufacturers, is recommended for marine, building and industrial applications. New chopped-strand products for hydrolysisresistant thermoplastic applications and Class A SMC roving have been developed for specific customer process requirements. It is one of the few companies in the world that manufactures both glass fibre and polyester resin. The polyester-resin range was also expanded with new products. The most recently developed one is CE 75, an acrylic-modified orthophthalic binder resin especially designed for the production of quartz-based composite stone by Breton Technology. Production still relies heavily on open moulding; however, with accelerating foreign investment capital coming in, new and modern production techniques are gaining ground. However, at 380 gr/year, the current per-capita consumption of glass fibre is still considerably lower than the average European consumption of 1,000-1,500 gr/year. As regards thermoplastics, both Turkey’s domestic demand and its production for export to Europe are growing significantly. New companies have come into the market, and foreign compounders are considering investing in Turkey, either alone or with a local partner. GRP roof and sandwich truck panels constitute another industry where strong growth is expected. Pipe manufacturing for projects such as water and sewage treatment is on the rise for building and infrastructure activities.
