Using its technology experience in fabric formation and know-how in chemical additives, Milliken has developed Halo, a natural fibre thermoplastic composite. Halo utilizes advanced non-woven fabric formation technology to achieve a performance level with natural fibres that can compete with fibreglass-reinforced products. With additive technology, Milliken has addressed the challenges historically encountered with natural fibres. Driven by customer demand, Milliken has also developed Halo Plus, a material that absorbs the VOCs from other plastics in automotive interiors. The Halo team is focusing on automotive interior components, but Milliken is open to working with customers in exploring other applications in natural fibre-based materials. www.milliken.com Weight reduction though stiffness improvement in thin FRPs > Stand F55 Reducing the thickness of thin FRP laminates normally results in a loss in stiffness. Dr. Mirtsch GmbH and InnoMat GmbH have developed a new innovative solution for FRPs called the Vault-Structuring™ process. Vault-Structuring of thin sheet-like materials generates 3D-hexagonal structures that result in improved stiffness. This allows a further reduction in the material thickness and hence weight and costs. Vault-Structuring is applicable to thin deformable plastic materials, and fibre-reinforced plastic sheets (prepregs) and laminates. Both thermosets and thermoplastics are suitable as polymer matrix material. All types of fibres and fabrics can be used for composite reinforcement. New half-closed honeycomb core from PP, PET, PC and PA > Stand N18 EconCore presents a new half-closed thermoplastic honeycomb core. This core is based on EconCore’s patented ThermHex technology and was especially developed to provide the composite industry with a thermo-plastic honeycomb core of outstanding cost efficiency. Compared to conventional honeycombs, the new core provides very good core-skin bonding due to a larger bonding area for the skins. The half-open cells make it possible to create node bonds between the cell walls for maximum shear performance, and its continuous production is a cost advantage. EconCore is aiming to make honeycomb cores the best choice for many applications, replacing foam cores and homogeneous constructions. This new honeycomb core is made from polypropylene, polyethyleneterephthalate, polycarbonate, polyamide and other polymers, which are also found in flame retardant versions. The EconCore technologies, TorHex (paper honeycomb), ThermHex (thermoplastic honeycomb) and the new half-closed honeycomb core enable an in-line production of lightweight, cost-efficient honeycomb sandwich panels. For specific material combinations and large volume applications, EconCore offers licenses and engineering to integrate these www.econcore.com technologies into in-line panel production lines. 3D-structured thin composites are characterised by their highly improved rigidity and low weight. Due to the improved stiffness, the material thickness can be considerably reduced in comparison with flat composites. Covering a 3D-structured composite with a decorative film or laminate produces an attractive surface. InnoMat’s macro-structured sheets can be used for interior trim, air ducts and other applications where structural stiffness and low weight are required. The properties of vault-structured thin composite sheets can be adjusted to customer requirements by varying the structure type, size and depth, the matrix resin, the reinforcement fibres, the fabric, the number of plies and the material type in laminate layers. To meet customer requirements, InnoMat GmbH is prototyping 3Dstructured plastic sheets and laminates. www.innomat-gmbh.de Polymeric coupling agent > Stand G17 BYK-C 8000 is a polymeric coupling agent designed to improve the mechanical strength of filled radical curing systems. It enhances properties like flexural and tensile strength, compressive strength, abrasion resistance and impact strength. Preferred systems contain a resin based on unsaturated polyester or acrylic syrup and fillers based on Flexural strength increase in polymer concrete silica sand and/or ATH BYK-C 8000 creates a chemical bond between the filler and the resin. Due to its unique structure and its liquid form, it can be added to the polymer prior curing. Flexural strength can be improved by up to 50% by using only 0.2% BYK®-C 8000 (based on filler) in a typical polymer concrete formulation.
