It took six years of development to create a measurement cell meeting all these requirements (figure 3). Inlet Circular outlet (vent) The principle of measurement is based on the fact that resin has a different dielectric constant than air [3]. The capacity is constantly measured between the capacitive sensors and the upper mould half. As there is a linear dependence between the length of the sensors that is covered with resin and the output signal, the position of the flow front can be calculated [4]. To allow the measurement of electrical conductive textiles like carbon fibres, the complete surface of the mould has been anodized. User interface Figure 5 shows a LabVIEW-based user interface of the analysis module of the IVW measurement cell. This module allows the determination of the permeability values in both directions, K1 and K2, of the textile and the orientation of the ellipse right after the Fig. 3: 2D-COMP, the IVW permeability measurement cell Capacity Equivalent Time steps The measurement cell consists of an upper and lower aluminium mould, each with a thickness of 160 mm. The thickness is crucial to achieve sufficient stiffness. Permeability increases exponentially with decreasing fibre volume fraction. The tool is mounted on a die carrier, which can apply clamping pressures of up to 20 bars. Resin is injected through the central inlet of the upper mould half. The resin can flow off by a circular outlet. Eight capacitive lineal sensors with a length of 185 mm each are embedded in the lower mould in a stellar arrangement (figure 4). As the measurement is continuous, the permeability can be determined for every time interval of the measurement. The 2D-COMP shows a high degree of automation. This starts with CNC-cutting of the textile and ends with an automated post analysis and documentation of the re-sults. IVW is cooperating with “Gunther Röder & Oliver Scherer Messtechnik GbR” to commercialize the 2D- COMP permeability measurement cell immediately.
