KNOW-HOW Prototyping g…/… Next-generation stereolithography materials improve Fused deposition modelling Also known as an “additive” process, FDM involves the extrusion of molten plastic to form cross-sections of a part design on a platform. The materials solidify quickly and the platform drops to accommodate the extrusion of new layers until the part is complete. The plastics typically used in this process include ABS, polycarbonate and polyphenylsulphone; each material features varied degrees of strength and high temperature performance capabilities. Engineering models and prototypes produced via FDM are well suited for functional testing. However, while the end parts are durable, they exhibit a rough surface finish that is produced by the extrusion process. 3-D printing Also known as inkjet printing, the 3DP process uses powdered resins and plasters that are bonded together using a water-based adhesive dispensed from a print head. (Some methods can utilize photopolymers jetted onto a substrate in combination with the print head.) As in the other “additive” methods, 3DP builds parts up cross-section by cross-section to form a solid model. 3DP is most often used for the rapid production of concept models. The process is also the only “additive” method that can generate multicoloured parts. The biggest drawback to 3DP is the rough surface that characterizes parts built with this process. Mechanical strength is also much lower than that attainable with other “additive” technologies. SLS. Among the performance improvements featured by the photopolymers are high impact resistance and high elongation to break, yielding parts with excellent toughness. Resulting SL prototypes combine good toughness and rigidity, while retaining mechanical properties over time that are comparable to SLS parts. Advancements in RP With the recent introduction of next-generation SL materials, design engineers now have the opportunity to obtain unprecedented performance from SL prototypes, obviating the need for use of other methodologies in many cases. Specifically, through the development of advanced hybrid photopolymers, Huntsman has created nextgeneration SL materials that combine the smooth surface finish for which SL parts have long been known with dimensional stability and mechanical characteristics that were once only achievable with Fig. 3: Tensile modulus evolution in time (humid conditions: 40°C, 90% RH) Under such conditions, many previous generation SL photopolymers would lose much of their strength in the first month.
