he liquid transportation industry has used metal vessels made of carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium for years, depending on the composition of the liquid chemical concerned and on availability and cost considerations. In many countries, metal tanks are slowly being replaced by more chemically-resistant materials as the plastic industry develops new materials. A special, multipurpose product offering many advantages in that area was recently developed, in the form of a multi-compartment oval tank. or any other maintenance. It is also weather-proof. - Corrosion resistance: the special material used is resistant to chemicals, making the tanks flexible enough to store any chemical with various acidity levels. - Strength and safety (standards compliance): the tanks are produced under the American Standards PS 15-69 for chemical process equipment, and are strong and durable for the transportation of chemicals. The multiple-compartment system minimises sloshing during driving. - Insulation properties (optional): if necessary, the GRP tanks can be easily insulated to give very high resistance to heat or cold. - Easy repair: in case of accident, repair can take place on the spot with simple methods and materials, without using heat, electricity or flame, and without any risk of explosion or fire. Each compartment has a maximum capacity of 8,000 litres for a 12-metre trailer. In general, the GRP material used for the fabrication of tanks offers a number of advantages over tanks made of metals like stainless steel, carbon steel or aluminium, which need special chemical protective coats to achieve similar advantages. A new type of multi-compartment oval (M.C.O.) tank made of GRP is currently fabricated in Egypt. Some of the commonly acknowledged acceptability factors for the new tanks are listed below: - High aesthetic value: the oval shape combines strength with aesthetic design, and its low height makes driving fast and easy. - Maintenance-free, weather-proof material: due to the durability of the material, the tank has very long service life and there is no need for re-painting Materials Fabrication and assembly produce the tanks: glass-fibre chopped strand mat (CSM), glass-fibre woven roving, surfacing veil, vinylester resin, isophthalic resin with mild chemical resistance, curing agents (MEKP catalyst), cobalt napthalate accelerator, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and wax release agents, and jute natural fibres for reinforcing the beams and saddles. The following materials are used to No33 June 2007 / JEC Composites Magazine The fabrication and assembly process of the multi-compartment oval tanks uses a system developed by a company with 35 years of experience in the GRP in industry. Each compartment has a maximum capacity of 8,000 litres for a 12-metre trailer, but they can be made smaller on customer request. The dividers can be perforated if used for one liquid, or sealed if for different liquids. The compartments are connected with PVC pipes and valves, which gives the flexibility to store different liquids or similar liquids in different compartments. The GRP M.C.O tanks are made up of separate oval cylinders with standard dimensions. They are contact moulded into no more than five oval cylindrical compartments. These are chemically welded with their dividers, end caps, stiffening braces, legs and beam supports. The fabrication process consists in laying a rich coat of vinylester resin and two layers of impregnated surfacing veil, and then a vinylester-rich resin coat followed by a 300 g/sm powder-bonded chopped strand mat (CSM).
