New glass fibre raises hydrolysis resistance in PPS polymers Using JEC Composites Show 2007 as the launch platform, Owens Corning presented PerforMax® HR 562 chopped strand glass fibre, the latest technology advance in its PerforMax® family of hydrolysis-resistant highperformance thermoplastic reinforcements. The new reinforcement has been specifically developed for use with polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) – one of the highest continuous temperature resistant thermoplastics – to which it brings optimum heat resistance compared to current reinforcements available for use with this polymer. Of key importance is that PerforMax® HR 562 enables PPS to replace metals as well as expensive alternative hydrolysis-resistant specialty thermoplastics in hot water plumbing and heating applications. The hydrolysis and fatigue resistance of PPS reinforced with PerforMax® HR 562 led to its adoption by leading Japanese valve manufacturer, Time Engineering Co Ltd, for its diaphragm solenoid valves for domestic hot water boilers. Able to maintain its mechanical properties when in contact with boiling water, the material successfully replaces brass and bronze in these components. www.owenscorning.com Glass fibre for polyamide long-fibre technology PPG Industries introduced a new glass-fibre roving at the JEC Composites Show. In response to strong European customer demand, the company added TufRov 4510 continuous-strand glass-fibre reinforcement roving to its long-fibre-technology (LFT) product line that already includes TufRov 4588 glass fibre and TufRov 4599 glass fibre. Manufactured by PPG at facilities in Wigan, England, and Chester, S.C., USA, TufRov 4510 roving started production at the end of 2006. Designed specifically for compatibility with polyamide resins, the new roving provides excellent performance in a variety of long-fibre polyamide processes. The new roving offers excellent spreading of the roving bundle and good wetout for thermoplastic pultrusion (G-LFT) and modified wire-coating processes. The sizing on the fibre surface provides a good balance of dry strength, fibre resin wetting and minimal sizing rub-off at process contact points. The roving offers improved hydrolysis resistance in long-fibre polyamide compounds, and it is well-suited to the direct moulding of long-glass polyamide end products (D-LFT). Protective coating for rotor blades Special JEC Composites Show 2007 High-performance chopped strand for BMC applications www.ppg.com Saint-Gobain Vetrotex’s new high-performance choppedstrand reinforcement 979 is engineered for optimum performance in BMC compression and injection Direct LFT technology www.relius.de Relius Oldodur BladeSystem is an effective protective coating system developed for all application methods and especially designed for the durable protection of rotor blades for wind power stations. The system components are individually adjusted as a function of the manufacturing technology used for the rotor blades. Major advantages: Relius Oldodur BladeSystem is solvent-free and highly weather resistant. Today, wind power stations are part of the natural scenery, not only in Germany but also worldwide, as the environmentally sound use of wind energy is gaining ground. In addition to their technical perfection, the effectiveness and economic efficiency of power stations largely depends on the durability and ease of maintenance of the rotor blade coating. Impeller blade surfaces made of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic are exposed to extreme stress and are too easily damaged by air pollution due to wind and rotary movements. Relius Coatings has developed its economical BladeSystem coatings especially for these high requirements. The BladeSystem consists of a gelcoat, a surfacer, an edge protection and a rotor coating. Over 10,000 rotor blades coated with Relius products are currently withstanding wind and weather. moulding applications. The 979 sizing has been specially formulated for maximum compatibility with polyester and vinylester resin systems. It offers high impact resistance and outstanding thermal behaviour. The 979 choppedstrand reinforcements can be used in a wide variety of applications, including components for appliances; automotive headlamps and valve covers; electrical junction boxes and switch components; hand-tool housings; skins; and countertops. www.saint-gobainvetrotex.com Schmidt & Heinzmann GmbH & Co. KG, Bruchsal, Germany and Extricom GmbH, Blach No33 June 2007 / JEC Composites Magazine Extruder und Components, Laufen am Neckar, Germany announced that they will cooperate in the area of fibrereinforced plastics in the future. This co-operation is rooted in the advanced development of the Extricom RingExtruder in order to improve direct LFT technology, and includes marketing the complete systems engineering. Extricom GmbH specialises in plastics compounding and is also experienced in processing short fibres with the RingExtruder. Thus their aim is to harness this useful technique for direct processing of long fibre-reinforced plastics in the cyclic production of moulded parts. Schmidt & Heinzmann GmbH & Co. KG is a producer of sheet moulding compounds,
