INFRASTRUCTURE Infrastructure ARCHIMEDE, THE MEASURING TRAIN MAINTAINING INFRASTRUCTURE: EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT IS KEY TO KEEPING MAINTENANCE COSTS OF RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE DOWN. THE ARCHIMEDE MEASURING TRAIN, USED BY ITALIAN RAILWAY NETWORK COMPANY (RETE FERROVIARIA ITALIANA - RFI) IS ONE OF THE MOST ADVANCED MONITORING AND CONTROL TOOLS IN EUROPE, AND BOOSTS OVERALL MANAGEMENT OF THE RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE. Rail diagnosis For diagnosing components along the railway line – such as contact lines, devices for repeating discontinuous and continuous signals in the locomotive, ground-train telecommunications equipment and the track - it is best to use on-board diagnostic systems that function even when the train is in motion. In Italy, the state railways (Ferrovie dello Stato - FS) have, for some time, being using trains for diagnosing faults on the track and studying the geometry of contact lines. Increasingly, sophisticated technology enables and calls for a wider range of equipment placed along tracks; and diagnostic studies of components are carried out using instruments installed on moving vehicles. Archimede, the measuring train To meet the needs outlined above, a specialised service train has been designed and built. By running on the network - frequently (every 10 days) and at maximum operating speed - it analyzes the railway equipment. Issue 15 © RFI EURAILmag Business & Technology © RFI
