Coatings HUNTSMAN ADVANCED MATERIALS TECHNOLOGIES FOR RAILWAY INDUSTRY INCREASED LEGISLATIVE PRESSURE IN EUROPE AND NATIONAL DIRECTIVES ON THE USE OF VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (VOC) ARE DRIVING FORWARD SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN THE GLOBAL COATINGS INDUSTRY. THESE CHANGES ARE IMPACTING THE RAILWAY RELATED COATINGS SECTOR WHERE WATERBORNE AND HIGH SOLID PRODUCTS ARE NOW BECOMING THE TECHNOLOGIES OF CHOICE FOR REPLACING CONVENTIONAL SOLVENT BORNE PRODUCTS IN AMBIENT AND FORCE CURED APPLICATIONS. HUNTSMAN ADVANCED MATERIALS OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF EPOXY RESINS AND CURING AGENTS TO FULFILL THESE REQUIREMENTS. he performance and application requirements of epoxy coatings employed in the railway industry can be vast and often complex. Typically, solutions need to offer good adhesion properties, corrosion protection plus mechanical and chemical resistance as standard. However, in many instances they also need to be suitable for potential contact with food. Corrosion protection solutions for the exterior hull of trains, as well as for interior structures, are already state-of-the-art thanks to waterborne primer technologies. Huntsman is investing heavily in research and development in this area, to improve resin emulsions as well as waterborne hardeners and further this environmentally friendly type of technology. The same is true for high solids and solvent-free coatings for use in goods wagons that carry liquid (tank transport) and solid materials. In this application, the chemical and mechanical resistance properties of epoxy systems is key. In terms of food contact applications, for example, coatings used inside tanks for transporting liquid and dry foodstuffs, Huntsman can offer several product formulations that comply with European and international FDA (Food & Drug Administration) requirements. In addition, a new product range, suitable for coating interior elements of passenger trains, is available. Huntsman’s “Low Emission” hardener range can minimise the transfer of emissions into the atmosphere and therefore prevent any negative effects to indoor air quality. These hardeners are suitable for applications that need a product to function in direct contact with metal substrates (eg primers) and are also ideal for use on flexible membranes, sound damping intermediates or decorative and mechanical resistant final layers T ABOUT HUNTSMAN Huntsman is a global manufacturer and marketer of differentiated chemicals. Its operating companies manufacture products for a variety of global industries, including chemicals, plastics, automotive, aviation, textiles, footwear, paints and coatings, construction, technology, agriculture, health care, detergent, personal care, furniture, appliances and packaging.
