Tunnels cing the ETCS system to the new Mattstetten-Rothrist line. "Our knowledge of this complex system is growing with each meter covered by test trains,” pointed out Mr Hess. Access is also key to ensuring maximum performance of the service. At the new junction station in Viège, intensive construction has been underway for some years now, and the third line, between Ostermundigen and Gümligen, was recently opened. A third line planned between Rütti and Zollikofen will boost punctuality of the growing number of passenger and goods trains in the Berne sector and heading for Oberland. When the base tunnel opens, it will bring the Valais and Swiss Mittelland closer together. About 25% of journeys from 17 towns between Geneva and St Gall, to six of the largest localities in the Valais, will take one hour less. One third of train journeys to the Valais will be 30 minutes faster. The Lötschberg will make two thirds of rail journeys in the region the fastest mode of transport to the Valais Monika Hochuli, BLS AlpTransit SA technical systems will be up and, and drivers, train and other operating staff will receive training. During this period, commercial goods trains and some international passenger trains (direct from Spiez to Brigue) will already be operating on the new base line. This 300-page publication describes the steps involved in this marathon construction project. Well-written and highly informative, itcovers areas such as geology, managing excavated materials and the various construction sites. Richly illustrated with color photographs by Thomas Andenmatten, the book also includes two sections with black and white photos by Bernard Dubuis, on the inspiring work of the tunnel miners. Published by BLS AlpTransit and written by engineers involved in building the tunnel, “De l’idée au percement” will appeal to both rail professionals and readers in general. Available in information centers or online at www.staempfli.com. Packed with interesting details and illustrated with clear photos, “De l’idée au percement” describes the project of the century step by step – from the pioneering ideas and preliminary sketches to drilling in April 2005. SWIFTER ACCESS TO THE VALAIS The Lötschberg tunnel is equipped with a Level 2, electronic security system for ETCS trains. Optical signalling is no longer used on the base line, but instructions are delivered by radio to the train driver, and appear onscreen in the cab. According to Hansjörg Hess, head of infrastructure and a CFF executive, the system will be ready when the tunnel opens. And this is largely due to the experience the CFF gained when introdu- © BLS AlpTransit AG MODERN BUILDING TECHNOLOGY REQUIRES MODERN PROJECT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE.
