LIFE BEYOND NUMBERS

Future events may not change an
actual event, but they can certainly
change the perception of them - for
good or for bad...

Meanwhile in Enterprise, Alabama...

So - do Future Events Determine those in the Past...?

In the main square of the city of Enterprise, Alabama, there is
a statue depicting a woman holding a model of a Mexican Boll
Weevil above her head...
Back in 1915 the Mexican Boll Weevil found its way from Texas
to Alabama and progressed to effectively wipe out the Cotton
crops on which the city depended for its prosperity...
The Boll Weevil mean that either the farmers had to go bankrupt or change the crop; fortunately they changed the crop
from cotton to peanuts and they never looked back..

The statue is in recognition of the tough lessons that the
farmers leaned from the Boll Weevil and how those dark days
actually turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to
the city, there is a plaque on the statue that reads...

My experience in London was, at the time, tough, harsh and at
times frightening. In hindsight and on the basis of my current
experience, however, that experience has changed from a
negative one to a positive one...
The Mexican Boll Weevil that caused such chaos in 1915, with
the benefit of future perspective, became a celebrated hero
and saviour of the city of Enterprise...
Future events may not change an actual event, but they can
certainly change the perception of them - for good or for bad...
In life and in business it has been my experience that when
$#@t happens - as it undoubtedly will if we are fortunate to
live long enough - the future will always have the ability to
change the perspective on the past...

"Our Present can reshape our Past. If we choose to live in the
past, then of course we are stuck with what we experienced
there; only when we live in the present and change the lens
through which we view our past can we actually change it,
reshape it and thrive as a consequence of having
experienced it..."

In profound appreciation of the boll weevil and what it has
done as the herald of prosperity this monument was erected
by the citizens of Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama.

But certainly, with the benefit of hindsight, the perspective
and implications of historic events can be changed depending
on the future from which the perspective is taken...

The principles apply to our professional and personal lives
and the choices we have regarding our interpretation and
gratitude of past events...

other county in the USA, and by 1993 had 128,000 Acres
planted in Peanuts...

Perhaps not in the literal sense...

We can choose to change the events in the past to be empowering and constructive or we can allow them to be limiting
and restrictive; it all depends on our perspective...
