Event Lycra ® boosts innovation As part of the launch of its latest innovation, LYCRA® 2.0 Garment Technology, Invista staged the first edition of a prestigious International Design Contest for young designers. The two events came together on the evening of September 7th at La Serre du Parc André Citroën in Paris, an outstanding venue where the winner was announced in front of an audience of over 250 major industry guests. n exclusive jury announced the winner of Lycra’s International Design contest which asked students from leading colleges across the globe to create garments using Invista’s new patented technology. The winner from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Brandon Grimm, was selected ahead of finalists from De Montfort University, Leicester, the Istituto Europeo di Design, Milan and Hong Kong Polytechnic. Brandon’s beautiful design has won global recognition and will be the main focus of Invista’s introduction of the Lycra® 2.0 Garment Technology to the industry. The creative director of La Perla, Giovanni Bianchi, announced the winner at the launch event of the new innovation. The other judges on the panel included Mahesh Amalean, Chairman, MAS Holdings, Lori Greeley, President of Stores, Victoria’s Secret and Valérie Lemant, Director of the Lingerie Division, Eurovet. The judges examined how well the students’ designs captured the stretch and recovery benefits of the Lycra® 2.0 Garment Technology, as well as placing high value on creativity and potential commercial use of the garment. Giovanni Bianchi said, “It has been an enormous honor to be involved in this inspiring design contest within the world of intimate apparel. The panel and I were delighted with the high standard of entries and we had the unenviable task of choosing the winning garment. It has been an incredibly close competition but we felt that Brandon’s design delivered on all of the elements we were looking for.” Inspired by historical floral Victorian ornaments, Brandon’s winning garment is a merry widow and knicker set which is halter neck in style. Its floral motif is echoed throughout the piece. The Lycra® garment technology was used to create the boning, cover inner and outer seams, attach the floral motifs, create the straps and garter, finish the hem as well as the stitch-free leg line, side and crotch seams. Brandon, who will graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology next year had in the past received two scholarships from the Underfashion Club which sponsors the college’s intimate apparel program. Brandon Grimm said, “I am totally honored to have won this international competition. I would like to thank Invista for giving us all the opportunity to produce garments using their new LYCRA® 2.0 Garment Technology as well as all the other finalists who have made the trip to Paris very special. I’m very much excited about what the future holds.” Ninabeth Sowell, Global Marketing Director Intimate Apparel and Swimwear at Invista commented on the involvement of all the colleges, “Having travelled across the world to introduce our first International Design Contest to all our participating fashion colleges, I am proud of every single entry. It has been such an inspiring journey to see the designs from start to finish and we have been thrilled with the response and quality of the work produced. We will continue to use all the 82 designs in our launch of the Lycra® 2.0 garment technology across the globe and would like to thank everybody involved.” A very international audience took part in this event and the dinner during which prototypes of garments made with Lycra® 2.0 by world famous names were shown. Models walking around a serpentine low platform made it possible to appreciate the garment constructions by La Perla, Chantelle, MAS, Top Form, Maidenform, Duloren, Nam Yueng, and Regina Miracle . The evening was undoubtedly an upscale event meant to make a statement and underline the new dynamism that will bring Lycra back to the top. MODELS BY THE FOUR FINALISTS
