Market focus Asia Comparator The CHINA WAS ONCE THE CORE MANUFACTURING NATION ON THE GLOBAL MARKET. THE COUNTRY HAD A REPUTATION FOR LOW COSTS, GOOD INFRASTRUCTURE AND WAS A HAVEN FOR BIG INTERNATIONAL CORPORATIONS. HOWEVERCHINA'S RISING DOMESTIC CONSUMER MARKET AND ITS NEW EMPHASIS ON GLOBAL TRADE HAS MADE IT LESS INTERESTING FOR FOREIGN MANUFACTURING INVESTMENTS. TODAY, INDIA AND SOUTH EAST ASIA HAVE SLOWLY RISEN AND ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY ATTRACTIVE FOR INTERNATIONAL BUSINESSES. DEZAN SHIRA & ASSOCIATES PROVIDED INTIMA ASIA’S READERS WITH THEIR IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF THE SITUATION. As the 21st century moves on, it has become apparent that it is not just China that is leading the way forward. The emergence of the nation has also stimulated and encouraged other Asian economies along with it. Consequently, what has over the last 10 years been largely seen as a Chinese play is now increasingly an Asian one. The emergence of other Asian economies has impacted other things as well, and as China has become more powerful, the country’s needs have changed. This is altering the types of investments and opportunities the country needs. Exposed by the global financial crisis as being an economy ou t o f b alance, C hina m ust n ow s hift i ts emphasis on global trade away from cheap manufacturing and instead develop its massive domestic consumer market. China has been caught out by the long perceived economic wisdom that one can’t have a thriving export market without a thriving domestic market. The cheap export driven manufacturing model that has led the Chinese economy for the past decade and a half is being replaced by a more balanced version that focuses more on a move up the value chain and an opening up of its domestic market of some billion plus consumers. China’s fiscal model, in short, is being re-calibrated, and it will take time for the country to readjust. These changes will impact the type of foreign investment, and foreign investors that are now suitable for China. Some that have been in China for a long time may find that the benefits of remaining have diminished. Others will notice that domestic market opportunities have
