Among the victims, distinction is made between fatalities, seriously injured people (hospitalised) and slightly injured people. On 1st January 2005, the Government changed the definition of the severity of victims, in line with the European directive: fatality: Victim who dies within 30 days following the accident (instead of 6 days previously), seriously injured person: (hospitalised injured person): Victim requiring over 24 hours in hospital (instead of a minimum of 6 days previously). Slightly injured person: (nonhospitalised or hospitalised for less than 24 hours). This leads to an increase on the number of fatalities and seriously injured people, and prevents all comparisons with previous years. 1,000 500 0 834 89 1998 775 92 1999 831 67 2000 783 114 2001 599 73 2002 544 50 2004 820** 54** 2005 714 64 2006 774 37 2007 533 54 2003 * of which on the Paris ring road and slip roads: 826 accidents, i.e. 10% of the total number of accidents in Paris and 993 victims (925 slightly injured people, 66 seriously injured people and 2 fatalities), or 10% of the total. ** change of the definition of the severity of victims.
