Opinion poll Source: Paris City Hall, Roads and Transportation Division Type of bicycle users 61% are men (59% in 2005), 50% are aged between 30 and 50 (51% in 2005), 78% are of working age (76% in 2005), 47% do not own a car (45% in 2005), 82% have a category-B driving licence (83% in 2005), 11% wear a helmet (16% in 2005, however, 14% of private bicycle users wear one as against 6% of Vélib’ users), 35% of cyclists regularly travel by bicycle since 2002 or earlier (55% in 2005, however, 46% of private bicycle users cycled before this date and 79% of Vélib’ users began cycling in 2007). Opinion poll conducted on 9 October 2007 with 2,052 cyclists in the street (one third Vélib’ users and two thirds users of private bicycles) and in addition 520 cyclists were surveyed by telephone using a probing questionnaire. Details of bicycle journeys 67% of journeys made on a weekday are for professional reasons (74% in 2005), The average recorded duration of a journey is 25 minutes (25 minutes in 2005), 78% of cyclists frequently use their bicycles (every day or at least 3 to 4 times a week, 81% in 2005). Perception of road developments 60% and 50% of cyclists respectively think that green areas and areas with traffic calming have made life easier for cyclists in Paris (65% and 64% in 2005), 44% think that pedestrian zones make life easier for cyclists (44% in 2005), 74% think that bus lanes are part of the cycle path network (69% in 2005) and 87% when these lanes are protected by a separation (87% in 2005). 18
