Selling beauty online
n n n Similarly, The Look Store, an online beauty superstore founded by Alan Mruvka, co-founder and former ceo of E!Entertainment Television, has a heavy focus on celebrities who share their beauty picks. In the same vein, US department store Barney’s has revamped its site which now features a list of ‘influencers’ including celebrities L’Wren Scott and Katie Holmes.

E-commerce challenges But despite the innovation, problems abound. According to a report on the digital luxury market by Altagamma and McKinsey, one fifth of customers abandon a purchase at check out because of the

payment or delivery fees. A survey by French polling group IFOP also reveals that almost half of online shoppers had found at least one problem following the purchase, and 28% asked for a refund in the past year. “There are a range of best practices for any online retailer—search engine optimization, shopping cart process, merchandising and cross-selling. Shoppers buy online for one of three main reasons—convenience, value and choice —so understanding what this means in the context of beauty products is critical,” says Forrester’s Gill. “E-commerce is a major challenge indeed. It represents a real turning point for brands, which then become distributors of their

products, and who need to rethink their strategy to adapt to these changes,” points out Rouge Interactif’s Legros. Another aspect that online retailers need to take on board is the habits of a fully connected, mobile consumer. “Consumers are turning to a wider range of touchpoints and retailers will in turn need to experiment and identify new technologies and services,” says Gill. Sephora’s Bornstein concurs:“On mobile, over 70% of our traffic comes from an iOS device, so leveraging the new site technology to enhance our app experiences was a must.” Brands have only hit the surface when it comes to the potential of online retailing. n

Case Studies: Innovative approaches to online selling
US-based OpenSky is an online social store that uses experts styles and tastes to guide consumers. The site features products curated by celebrities or experts who also share product recommendations and advice. Shoppers can communicate with curators, watch their videos and read their reviews. Beauty curators include fragrance expert Chandler Burr and skincare brand founder Dr Frederic Brandt. In June, Burr launched a collection called The Untitled Series, which selects a fragrance and strips it of packaging and gives it a critical assessment to encourage consumers to take an uninfluenced view of a scent. The site is seen as a means for shoppers to get in touch with experts in a way that is not possible in traditional retail. Members can shop directly from their personalized homepage, which features a feed of new products recommended by the experts they connect with. “It’s creating a more personalized way to shop by allowing you to pick who you want to follow based on your interests,” says OpenSky gm of beauty and healthy living Allison Slater. The site has 1.5 million members. Bloom.com is a social beauty networking site where users can exchange ideas and recommendations with their ‘BeautyMatches’ or other users with the same tastes. Founder and ceo Julie Mahloch dreamt up the idea from the way women chat about their experiences and the strong interest in social networking circles.“People use Facebook in a very generic way. The innovation that Bloom brings is in making those conversations relevant by connecting women or peers that have similar beauty profiles,” she says. The company is also trailblazing what it calls “visual selling” and using its trends pages to focus heavily on the looks instead of the products. “Beauty is about inspiration. People want to achieve a look; they want the end result,” explains Mahloch. “Women still want to walk into a store and have that experience. They want to be sold, to be told what to do and what to try,” she adds. Upcoming developments at Bloom include mobile and iPad applications. The Feelunique beauty website boasts 18,000 products from more than 500 brands ranging from top-end prestige to mass.“We offer more choice than any of our competitors, all with free delivery,” says Feelunique co-founder and ceo Aaron Chatterley. “We launched in 2005 because we felt that no one was doing beauty online very well and there was an opportunity to own the online beauty space.” The company recorded a 63% rise in earnings for the year ending March 2012, and 50% increase in sales to reach £16.1m ($26m). It supports its business with advertising and a focus on CRM. It has also developed a strong international reach, which Chatterley says makes up almost half of its business.The company has just unveiled a French language site and will be launching other languages. In February it signed up Harper’s Bazaar beauty director Newby Hands to develop editorial and it is working on adding more personalization services and a more targeted search system.
