Sample as reward Clarins Fragrance Group president Joël Palix believes that more could be done at the point-of-sale given the wealth of information that retailers now have about their shoppers thanks to data collected online and in-store purchase history. “We rely a lot on our retail partners, on CRM and on advertising with integrated samples. With their important databases retailers could do more sampling via CRM, and not just in terms of in-store campaigns. You need to send the right sample to the right person at the right time and there are things [brands and retailers] can do together to make that happen,” Palix explains. One suggestion is that retailers reward the consumer who returns with her sample to purchase the

full-size fragrance with a gift. This would allow the brand to track the return on investment for media campaigns that have featured samples and is also a way to bring new consumers to the store. Another strategy is to link sample distribution to the retailer’s loyalty scheme. However, for this to be effective, the retailer needs to access the consumer’s purchase history to be sure that the samples fit her profile so that they have a better chance of being used. “Recognizing a client’s loyalty should include that kind or service, but it hasn’t quite been perfected yet,” remarks Aptar Beauty and Home vice president of business development Isabelle Lallement. She adds that the major challenge for in-store sampling is that the sample is given at the end of the shopping experience, once the fragrance has been purchased. Brands and retailers could also work together to create an interactive experience in-store through olfactory marketing initiatives that would include a sampling

Sampling case studies
The luxury of choice: California-based niche fragrance retailer Lucky Scent provides two ways for consumers to receive samples online, either free-of-charge along with a purchase (the number of samples can be up to six, depending on the amount spent) or a selection of pay-for samples. Lucky Scent offers an impressive number of fragrances in sample size—all of those sold on the site are available as samples and range in price from $3 to $6. This is an ideal way for consumers to discover new scents, especially niche fragrances, which tend to be more expensive. Mixing channels: US home-shopping channel HSN teamed up with beauty product review website Totalbeauty.com to launch a sampling program, Total Beauty Collection for HSN. While not strictly for fragrance, this deal is the first sampling partnership between a beauty-specialist website and a home-shopping retailer. The collection launched in September on HSN’s 24-hour beauty program, and features nine“deluxe-sized” samples. It will also be offered on Totalbeauty.com with between four and six samples for $15. According to Total Beauty, 84% of consumers who have sampled a product will recommend the brand and 80% will talk about the brand.

It seems that retailers are paying more attention to their sampling strategies online than in-store. Los Angeles-based retailer Lucky Scents offers two ways to sample online: either complimentary samples (up to six) are given depending on the amount of products purchased, or a pay-for sample service, which allows consumers to buy sample-size versions of all of the fragrances on offer on the website (see case studies). Technological advances, such as QR codes can also make fragrance samples a more valuable investment for brands. A consumer who scans a code on the sample with her smartphone could go to a dedicated website that provides information on the product, brand and fragrance family, as well as purchasing options. Fragrance sampling may have much potential, but it is up to brands and retailers to get them into consumers’ hands. n
