Companies on the move

portfolio will see skincare take a bigger share of the mix. “We see skincare as having the largest opportunity for growth and ultimately accounting for 50% of the business, up from 40% today. This is because of the price point and global expansion,” Beattie explains.

Spa ambitions Along with a focus on skincare will be a major push on the brand’s spa heritage. In September, Arden teamed up with JH Anderson Holdings to take a minority stake in Red Door Spa Holdings, the operator of Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas and Mario Tricoci hair salons. The companies paid $12m for the share and have an option to buy Red Door outright. Arden already licenses its Elizabeth Arden and Red Door brand names to Red Door Spa Holdings, which owns and operates 31 Red Door spas and reported sales of $150m in fiscal 2011. “We feel that given the repositioning of the brand combined with international expansion that it is the ideal time to align our investment with the spa company. We have a very strong spa heritage, which is something that other prestige brands don’t have, as well as the largest spa platform in the world,” Beattie comments. “What we will see over the next several years is the presence of our spa platform in many emerging markets, such as Asia and the Middle East, where the spa business is growing even more robustly than the prestige beauty business,” he continues. In emerging markets, the spa will also serve as a complementary distribution channel for product sales, given limited retail infrastructure in some of these countries. Beattie says that one of the reasons for investing in Red Door Spa Holdings was the opportunity to enhance product sales at spas in the US and that once this exercise has been perfected the company will begin the expansion of spas internationally. Boosting international business is a key

the brand has very limited distribution in three of the top-four beauty markets— Japan, Germany and France—and that it will probably need a bigger presence there to reach its global market share goals. However, at the same time he says a major move into these markets is not planned in the immediate future and underlines that although these countries are among the largest for beauty today, they may not be the most important in five to 10 years given the rise of emerging markets. Doubling the size of the brand driven particularly by international markets is perhaps one of the key challenges for the business, according to Beattie. However, he is also confident that given the product revamp, new counters, a solid spa proposition and strong awareness, the brand has the tools to pull this off. n

Visible Difference
Elizabeth Arden is focusing its skincare business on three main pillars: Prevage, Ceramide and a new line called Visible Difference. The Visible Difference range was created by consolidating three skincare lines. It is a spa-inspired line that is based on three daily regimens: Oil Regimen, Skin Balancing Regimen and Gentle Hydrating Regimen. The range also includes specialist products, such as an eye gel, eye cream and a mask. Visible Difference is positioned as Arden’s entry-level skincare line, with prices ranging from $20-$42.

part of the brand’s repositioning. Arden currently does 60% of its sales in North America and the rest in international markets. Its first objective will be to improve its share in countries where it is already strong, which will facilitate entry to markets where it is not yet present. Beattie points out that
