Sustainable packaging in the BRICs

In India the buying decision is hardly determined by sustainability, especially when it comes to packaging. ”The upper class has environment and sustainability in their consciousness, but they pay more attention to sustainability in the product itself,” explains Puneet Sona, sustainability entrepreneur at Vasudha Ecofriends. He also believes that manufacturers think about sustainability, but only if it serves their agenda of lowering the cost, and so sees the evolution of sustainability closely linked to cost effectiveness. Data from Euromonitor show that things are slowly improving and in 2011 the Indian packaging market focused more on the environmental impact of increased packaged goods consumption. “This has obliged many enforcing agencies and authorities to come out with regulations that will help minimize the environmental impact. The focus on growing green technologies for packaging is increasing among suppliers as they see their business being threatened due to the adverse impact packaging production and/or waste can have on the environment,” says Euromonitor senior packaging analyst Regina Maiseviciute. In Asia, says Organic Monitor’s Sahota, the major push towards green packaging comes from multinationals like P&G and L’Oreal. “We do see some initiatives from Japanese companies, but these are focusing on reducing packaging materials rather than sustainable packaging solutions.”

The Chinese government requires packagers and companies to follow the principle of “Reduce, recycle, degradable, hazard-free and no external pollution during the manufacturing process and application process,” Euromonitor’s Maiseviciute says. “The impact of China’s government push on green packaging is the emergence of provincial-level green package associations to supervise green packaging efforts. In addition, leading packagers are promoting the concept to introduce their own green packaging standard. For example, Tetra Pak introduced the new Tetra Pak ‘FSG’ logo in China to support the government’s commitment to the Forest Stewardship Council. This gave Tetra Pak a positive image with the government and Chinese consumers and differentiated itself from competitors.” Euromonitor data on plastic pouches, which are often made from sustainable materials and are refillable, helps understand the commitment to sustainability in China. In spite of being a small pack type in beauty and personal-care packaging, pouches posted strong results in China in 2011. “The years 2010 and 2011 saw the introduction of stand-up pouches in bath and shower and haircare products as refill packs, as consumers are inclined to purchase the refill pack of commonly used products, which is more economical and ecofriendly. However, plastic pouches are unlikely to post a significant challenge to rigid plastic, as consumers only purchase a refill if they recognize the product,” predicts Maiseviciute. A look at these emerging markets shows how sustainable packaging is gaining momentum, but there’s still a lot to do. Valerie Jacob, international marketing director perfumery and cosmetics for SGD Group comments: “Brazilians are very confident about their local brands and are at the forefront of sustainability. In China, consumers are still more attracted to international brands. Local brands inspired by traditional Chinese medicine are starting to appear again and the Chinese will go back to their eco-friendly culture, but it takes time. Even in Europe consumers aren’t ready to pay more for sustainable products.” She adds: “The key is working with brands and having government support. This way we can improve a lot in terms of process, and move forward together.” As consumers’ knowledge of green issues increases and the industry explores smart and affordable solutions, the use of green packs is likely to become more widespread. The road is still long, but Brazil, India and China are up for the challenge. n
